Bali Art Residency 2024

In the shifting light of Bali, twelve global artists embarked on a month-long journey of creation, inspired by the island’s blend of ancient traditions and modern life. Their works span digital imaginings, performances, installations, and tangible art, shaped by memory and discovery.

This exhibition weaves together the essence of Bali’s culture, the artists’ journeys, and their intimate voices. It is an invitation to explore the elusive, the invisible, and the profound connections born from this unique residency.

The charming visual tale of an Utari (Devanagari: उत्तरा; IAST: Uttarā; called Utarā in Sanskrit) is the name of the youngest daughter of King Wirata and Queen Sudesna in the Mahabharata epic. A symbol of beauty and goodness that spreads light and warmth around her.

Purple Valley Beringin

An artistic interpretation of the Balinese perspective on sacred nature, inspired by a ritual at the Bayan Tree in Bali. As a link between the material and spiritual realms, the Balinese believe that trees possess unseen electromagnetic fields.

Beauty and danger often go hand in hand.

I created this video self-portrait to challenge myself as an artist. In the artwork I wanted to show an aura of mystery, myth, and subtle danger, drawing inspiration from Balinese water spirits.

The first quarter of the moon. Venus

This painting series of 8 is about the full cycle of the Balinese moon. The first piece in the series was created during the month long Bali Art Residency, starting at the first quarter of the moon.  In Bali, demons have extra arms, heads or eyes that empower them to carry out extraordinary tasks. In my case, the 12 residents next to me were my empowerment. Walk within the environment that penetrates you, becoming a part of your exploration and development.  This is a self-portrait about the inner beauty that I maintain and preserve while fulfilling a large number of tasks.

Amphitrite

Amphitrite, the graceful and majestic goddess of the sea, with her flowing locks of seaweed and shimmering scales, she reigns over the depths of the ocean with untamed beauty and power. Her presence radiates a sense of calm and tranquility, bringing peace to all who gaze upon her enchanting form. She is the embodiment of strength and grace, a true queen of the sea whose beauty knows no bounds. In her presence, one cannot help but be in awe of her divine magnificence. Amphitrite, goddess of the sea, a symbol of beauty, power, and eternal grace.

FADING ROOTS

In Fading Roots, a last rice field stands fragile, a tender relic amidst Bali’s sprawling concrete transformation. The figure of a lone farmer anchors the scene—a ghost of tradition confronting a tide of progress. This haunting tableau whispers of sacrifice and survival, where prosperity erodes heritage, one grain at a time.

In the celestial realms, Saraswati, the goddess of wisdom and arts, radiates serene grace, draped in a white sari shimmering like moonlight. With a veena in hand, she inspires creation, her music flowing like the river that bears her name. Beside her, a swan symbolizes the discernment to separate truth from illusion. Saraswati's gentle gaze invites seekers to rise above ignorance, embracing knowledge and the beauty of creation as they follow her timeless melody toward enlightenment.

In the shadowed spaces where the seen and unseen intertwine, the Gri Gri hums with quiet energy. Neither object nor symbol, it holds the weight of whispered intentions, a tether to forces beyond comprehension. Bound with fragments of meaning—bone, thread, and breath—it becomes more than itself, a guardian shaped by belief. Worn or hidden, it weaves its presence into the fabric of existence, drawing unseen currents to shield, guide, and transform. Gri Gri is not merely held; it holds you, grounding the intangible within the tangible.

In the realm of the unseen, where fear and imagination blur, the chimera stirs—a formless shadow born of whispers and flickers at the edge of sight. It is not the beast of ancient tales, with many heads and monstrous form, but a shifting presence, intangible yet deeply felt. Like energy without anchor, it moves unseen, unsettling and elusive, feeding on the mind’s uncertainties. The chimera is a reflection of what is not real but feels all too present, a phantom of thought and emotion that bends the air and warps the world with the weight of its unspoken power.
